Praise for The High Street Caffe
John Bull, The Philadelphia Inquirer
”...With fabulous Cajun-Creole & Exotic cuisine in a distinctive Purple infused Dining Room, The High Street caffe in West Chester stands out from the crowd. The food is highly accomplished, even tastier than in New Orleans. A big bowl of Crab & Crawfish Bisque was a thick cream based bisque with lots of tender Crawfish & Jumbo Lump Crab and seasoned with enough exotic spice to leave my palate tingling with delight. Traditional Chicken and Andouille gumbo so thick you could eat it with a fork was tender chunks of chicken, slices of smoked Andouille sausage, Spanish onions, strips of green bell pepper, and rice in a peppery-yet-sweet Étouffée-like roux.
Homemade Bread (extremely unusual!) was magnificent. Crusty on the outside, soft and yeasty on the inside served with their own signature butter that is blended with homemade pesto, sugar and Cajun spices. For Appetizers, there is a large selection of Bayou Favorites such as Coconut Battered Beer Shrimp, Cajun Popcorn, Blackened Crab cake served atop of an oversized Portobello mushroom cap, and 16 others to choose from. I elected to try some of the exotic fare that caught my eye. The Blackened Alligator tail was superb. It was surprisingly tender and spiced perfectly.
I also tried the Kangaroo. A red Meat that was pepper encrusted and pan seared with truffle mushrooms and finished with a Zinfandel-Jezebel sauce. Where else can you get such culinary aspirations? Exceptional Jambalaya Fettuccine was unforgettable-partly because it was so generous in portion and so rich in flavor and texture that there were enough leftovers for 2 days. The dish heaped with chunks of chicken, fiery Andouille sausage, lots of crawfish, red onions, peppers, all tossed with aldente fettuccine in a spicy Creole sauce finished with a splash of crème’. Moulard Duck breast was a flavorful, pink meat bathed in a remarkable grand Marnier cream sauce. Deep fried shoe string Leaks were sprinkled on top. Mashed Yukon gold potatoes were exotically spiced with a blend of 28 Cajun spices, and sautéed sugar snap peas and zucchini were still crunchy.
Desserts were just as memorable. Peach infused –Habenero crème Brulee was delectably creamy with a hint of Habenero on the back end. Double chocolate Banana bread pudding, remarkably light in texture yet rich in flavor, was slathered with bourbon whipped cream and finished with chocolate syrup. The restaurant is BYOB. “So, what do you think?” My super-friendly, attentive waitress asked at the end of our meal. “Would you come back?” I sure will-and soon.

“...This funky BYOB has ceiling lights fringed with carnival beads and a gutsy kitchen that indulges in full-octane Cajun flavors. The Gumbo was authentic. The Voodoo Crawfish are for double-dare flame eaters only.”

“The Crawfish Étouffée rules at the High Street Caffe. And we’re just as crazy about the Blackened Crab Cakes served with a spicy artichoke sauce, the Caesar salad topped with Cajun Popcorn, and the mesquite grilled Portobello’s with smoked mozzarella.”
